While the powerful dynamic and drably named Clive Rosfield adorns the poster for Final Fantasy, and will serve as the game’s player character, anyone familiar with the series will know how important the supporting cast is.
Most notably, our player character has close ties to his brother, Joshua, and adopted sister, Jill Warrick. Beyond these three key characters, the six kingdoms of the land of Valisthea will play a huge role—so it’s also worth getting familiar with them.
Let’s dive in.
Joshua Rosfield—Dominant of Phoenix
Joshua Rosfield is the second son of the Archduke of Rosaria—the leader of the nation of The Grand Dutchy of Rosaria. He has inherited the Eikon [also known as summon] of Fire (the Phoenix) from his father and is thus the bearer of their factions symbol, serving as the Dominant of Phoenix.
Because of this, he has the ability to assume the Eikon’s form. He has also bestowed some of this his power to his older brother, Clive, who acts as his Shield (protector). This is the reason Clive’s left arm burns with a flame.
Early on in the games narrative (as shown within the Awakening Trailer) Joshua becomes involved in tragic events relating to the Dark Eikon, Ifrit, which in turn sets Clive on a path for vengeance.
Early in her life, Jill was taken from her homeland within Valisthea’s Northern Territories to become a ward of the Grand Dutchy of Rosaria—in the hope of securing peace between the, then, warring kingdoms.
She was raised alongside Joshua and Clive, becoming a key confidant for the brothers.
The Realms of Valisthea
Valisthea, home to Mothercrystals which bless the lands with aether, is split into six key realms (or kingdoms). Each realm has grown up centred around a Mothercrystal, forcing the factions into conflicts concerning each’s power.
However, during the events of Final Fantasy XVI a spreading malady known as the Blight is putting all six realms at risk. The realms themselves are:
The Grand Duchy of Rosaria
Home to our key characters, the Grand Duchy of Rosaria resides in western Valisthea. Rosaria draws its power from a Mothercrystal situated on a volcanic island just off the coast of the world’s western landmass, known as Storm.
Their Eikon is the Phoenix.
The Holy Empire of Sanberque
As the largest theocratic force in Valisthea, their people gather under the comfort and security of their Holy Emperor who they worship as the living incarnation of the one true deity. Their dominant is unknown, but it is known that their Mothercrystal known as Drake’s Head.
The Kingdom of Waloed
Claiming the entirety of Ash, the eastern half of Valisthea, The Kingdom of Waloed often find themselves in conflicts with the orcs and beastmen who call Ash home.
Their dominant is also unknown, but it draws its power from the Drake’s Spine.
The Dhalmekian Republic
Made up of five states, each which elects a representative for a ruling parliament, The Dhalmekian Republic draws its power from the Mothercrystal, Drake’s Fang, in the heart of a mountain range.
Located in the world’s southern reaches, the dominant of Titan, Eikon of Earth, has a significant say in the running of the Republic.
The Iron Kingdom
Formed by a small group of islands off the coast of Storm, Valthea’s western land mass, The Iron Kingdom controls Drake’s breath, the Mothercrystal at the heart of one of the islands.
Isolated from the other, larger islands, the residents of The Iron Kingdom speak their own language and hold an orthodox doctrine which judges Dominants to be unholy abominations.
The Crystalline Dominion
Sitting at the heart of the Valisthea, The Crystalline Dominion are built around the tallest of all the Mothercrystals, Drake’s Tail. However, unlike many of the other realms, no dominant calls this realm home.
Being the largest Mothercrystal, many battles have been fought over this relatively small portion of land, until all the realms agreed on an armistice. Within this armistice agreement, each realm is given equal claim to the blessings of Drake’s Tail.
It is clear that the world of Final Fantasy XVI is to be rich and diverse, making an excellent playground for yet another exciting instalment within the series. While much information regarding the smaller characters who reside within each realm is still hidden in obscurity, we can rest assured knowing this game is going to have a large, vibrant story to tell.
