After receiving the glorious Awakening Trailer back in September, fans of the sprawling franchise have been speculating and clutching at straws to try and draw the most from its images. Thankfully, soon after the announcement Square Enix graced fans with the treasure trove that is the game’s official website.
The landing page sports the incredibly evocative poster-image of the protagonist, Clive Rosfield, with the a snippet of lore below, reading “The legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough”. This opening image is enough to make any fan of the franchise giddy, but there’s plenty more on offer.
Let’s dive into what the rest of the site holds.
The site provides a fantastic introduction to the vibrant world of FFXVI.
First off, it introduces the world itself, known as Valisthea—a land blessed in the light of Mothercrystals. These Mothercrystals play a key role in the lore and make-up of the world, as they provide blessings to the lands that surround them. Because of these great powers, the world’s major civilisations have been constructed around these crystals.
These civilisations—known as realms—are The Grand Duchy of Rosaria, The Holy Empire of Sanbreque, The Kingdom of Waloed, The Dhalmekian Republic, The Iron Kingdom and The Crystalline Dominion. Each of which draws power from a particular mother crystal, which allows them to summon an Eikon (known to veterans of the franchise as a summon) through a chosen Dominant (spiritual link to the Mothercrystal) within their ranks. However, whether the kingdoms choose to utilise this power is totally up to them.
The site introduces us to our three key characters, Clive Rosfield, Joshua Rosfield and Jill Warrick.
To keep it brief, Clive Rosfield is the player character and the son of the Archduke of The Grand Duchy of Rosaria. Clive’s role is that of a Shield, a protector, and his responsibility is to protect his brother Joshua Rosfield who is the realm’s Dominant. Jill Warrick, who grew up amongst the brothers as though she was their sister, was born in the Northern Territories but has gained the trust of the brothers, becoming their trusted confidant.
Beyond lore regarding the world itself, the site also contains two key notes from the game’s director, Hiroshi Takai, and producer, Naoki Yoshida.
Director Takai’s statement exclaims his passion for the franchise since the release of Final Fantasy I, while remembering his contributions to Final Fantasy XI and XIV. He also outlines how the team behind the game have spent considerable time mastering the ins and outs of the PS5, in order to ensure the game will make the most of the next-gen hardware upon which it will play.
Producer Yoshida’s statement is far more casual, noting how the size of the team behind XVI has expanded vastly since beginning development, allowing them to build upon and polish the core of the game.
Yoshida also clues us in that the game’s next big information reveal is scheduled for some time in 2021, prompting fans to enjoy speculating—and reminding them to play Final Fantasy XIV, the MMO upon which he serves as director.
